Guest Post By Remi Haleel I recently came across this posting from the Sheridan branch of Chartwells. Frankly, I think this is a ridiculous PR stunt from this company. Having had friends who worked for Chartwells in the past I can honestly say that the company has contributed to the problem through wasteful policies that require employees to throw out extra food, rather than donating it to a shelter. If you add up the amount of food, throughout the year, this company has contributed roughly 2 tonnes every week added to landfills. I don't know about you, but I personally don't want to contribute or encourage companies like this. So I say to you that it is time to boycott Chartwells locations. Also, SHAME ON SHERIDAN COLLEGE FOR SUPPORTING SUCH BEHAVIOUR, especially with teams like Mission Zero who apparently have supported this PR stunt. "We won't have a society if we destroy the environment"

I have always wondered am I weird to think that eating the rind on cheese is strange and doesn't add to the flavour ? Recently, one of my friends actually ate the rind and he said he usually eats the rind because you can actually taste the intense flavours within the cheese's aging process. By Kevin King Ordinarily, we would post information related to food, but this is something we had to include: Recently, we connected with a growing start-up that I'm sure will go viral sooner rather than later. The company consists of a team of Sheridan students who have created a web based platform called Univjobs.ca. The platform allows students/recent grads to connect with employers for meaningful career opportunities. The coolest part of the app; YOU CAN TRACK YOUR APPLICATION THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE HIRING PROCESS. What does that mean ? this platform reduces anxiety for students (just like me) meaning you don't have to worry about situations like "Did they see my profile" or "Why haven't I heard back yet". This site also makes hiring for employers easier too because it saves them the time of having to go through each process of the individual school. Basically these guys are trying to make life easier for everyone. This is not really food related but its made lives as food propitiators easier by giving a simpler solution. The team is staying active they won the #Pitch18 competition at the beginning of the year, in which they competed against other teams from the ICUBE incubator program at the University of Toronto at Mississauga (which is actually where the picture was taken). To many this may look like an absolute blood bath, but it is a lot more fun than that. This is actually the Tomatina festival held annually in the small town of Bunol, Spain and it is essentially the world's GREATEST FOOD FIGHT. La Tomatina originated from two individuals who wanted to protest political ideas which were counter to their beliefs, however, today is a more fun. I personally have experienced the joy of being showered in the warm embrace of tomatoes. If you were wondering what the day at this festival looks like for a tourist ; you start the day extremely early (like around 4 or 5), get bussed to the town square (depending on where you are staying for us it was roughly an hour), drink your little butt off with other strangers every step of the way, The tomato trucks come in around 8 AM and after that ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE and you get to live your food fight dreams. After finish in the afternoon, get back on the bus laughing your ass off because of the most epic day ever. Definitely Worth It!!! It's getting closer to the end of summer, which means that everyone is trying to go camping before the end of the summer. Thats why we have decided to take a look at the greatest camping snack ever created Smores. The key to having a perfect smore is and always should be the chocolate because you don't want something that it too sweet or a chocolate that blends in with the marshmallow. We have taken this task upon ourselves to to provide you a couple options of chocolatefor all budgets:
1. Hershey's Milk Chocolate Hershey's chocolate is always on the sweeter side with a higher ratio of sugar to fat providing that firehose of sugar that those with a sweet tooth crave 2. Lindt Dark Orange Intense Chocolate Now Lindt is well recognised for their quality of chocolate, but when you are looking for chocolate for your next smore and youare a fan of dark chocolate, this chocolate is definitely a go to option as the take of pure cacao is balanced out perfectly with this orangy citrus flavour that makes the smore some thing of pure elegance. 3. Cadbury Milk Chocolate This another milk chocolate entry on the list but unlike Hershey Cadbury is definitely a milkier, melt in your mouth chocolate. If you are looking for the something to indulge your inner foodie at the Rogers Center (Stadium for YOOOURRRR TORONTOOOOO BLUEJAYS) we have made a couple suggestions on unique foods at the Jays game. BEST: Sausage poutine Go to Canada, get some poutine. And while the Blue Jays have many, many variations on the national classic, they do it right with this option: the Liberty Village sausage poutine. Available from Toronto Street Eats, it comes with two different kinds of sausage—smoked farmers and peameal-bacon, another Canadian staple—with onions and peppers atop fries with cheese curds and gravy. (Also Check out the Buffalo Cauliflower poutine for a "healthier" poutine) FUN: Streetcar Tacos Nothing says fun like tacos, because you can make it how you like it with as many toppings, as your heart desires.It is almost like being a kid again, where the possibilities are endless and the result is simply delicious. Located at Section 537, the Mexican-inspired dish is offered as a trio of chipotle ground beef or adobo chicken tacos, both served on a bed of creamy slaw, and with the option to customize with different toppings. (See Picture Below) WEIRDEST: Churro “Dessert” Poutine Rest assured, there’s no gravy, cheese curds or fries in this one, just their sugary counterparts: churro in place of the potato, ice cream in place of the cheese and caramel sauce to sub in for the gravy. “Dessert poutine” is a scary thought, but this one actually sounds on the level. Since the invention of the Pizza the great debate has begun; Can you put pineapple on a pizza ? Countries have gone to war over the right to put pineapple on their pizza (I mean it is possible, as people have gone to war over stupider reasons). So it all boils down to should you do it because for some pineapple on a pizza is like a gift that keeps on giving with that sweetness perfectly complementing the saltiness of the ham (talking specifically about the Hawaiian pizza), while to others pineapple is only meant to be eaten with fruit plates or to be eaten for a tropical Pina Colada and that makes everything all the more complicated. You have the inventor of the Hawaiian pizza (not actually from Hawaii) to blame for this current debate, and if you were wondering about the history of the Hawaiian pizza, we will give you a brief history lesson: Greek-Canadian Sam Panopoulos claimed that he created the first Hawaiian pizza at the Satellite Restaurant in Chatham,Ontario, Canada in 1962 (Its Truly Canadian EH!). Inspired in part by his experience preparing Chinese dishes which commonly mix sweet and savoury flavours, Panopoulos experimented with adding pineapple, ham, bacon and other toppings which were not initially very popular. The addition of pineapple to the traditional mix of tomato sauce and cheese, sometimes with ham or sometimes with bacon, soon became popular locally and eventually became a staple offering of pizzerias around the world. If you are interested in getting more of the history lesson on the inventor/invention of the Hawaiian Pizza click me The way that I see it, pineapple does have its place on a pizza, but ultimately it has to be balanced perfectly with the ingredients. The process that is currently being used for pizzas featuring pineapple (yes i said featuring because the pineapple is not the star) usually involves an amalgamation of toppings and that could be the reason people hate it, I mean nothing is more disgusting than pepperoni green olives ground beef and pineapple (actual pizza from my neighbourhood pizzeria) and if people are actually having that it makes sense why people are revolted by pineapple on a pizza, but i think its more like a chicken and waffles situation where the sweetness from the pineapple adds to certain toppings, and I just don't think that ant cured meats go well with a pineapple pizza. One of the many words I don't actually know how to pronounce is the word pecan, because depending on where you go it often lead to different pronunciations, thus meaning I have to relearn the way I say this word, WHICH MAKES THINGS SOOOO DANG CONFUSING. WHY, CAN WE AT LEAST FIGURE OUT ONE SINGLE PRONOUNCATION FOR THE WORD PECAN PLEASE!!! WE JUST NEED TO COME TOGETHER AND FIGURE THIS OUT. The way you pronounce "pecan" is based on where you're from. Saying "pee-can" is popular in the East Coast, while "pick-ahn" is how people say it in the Western Canada. The pronunciation might vary if it's used in a term, like "pecan pie." SO PLEASE!!! Being Canadian, the poutine is a very iconic food in my life, however, there are more ways than just the original to enjoy the beautiful combination. Here are my 5 favourites. 1. Pulled Pork Poutine Personally one of my favourites, the pulled pork poutine is an excellent combination of pulled pork, cheese curds, gravy and fries which adds some protein to your meal. 2. Bacon Cheeseburger Poutine Now that's what I call a meal and a half. Nothing like bacon, ground beef and cheese sauce to go with your fries, curds and gravy. Make sure it's maple bacon to make it more Canadian! 3. Nacho Grande Poutine For those who like to spice up your meal, this wonderful combination of homemade chili, salsa, guacamole, sour cream and jalapenos will truly add wonders to the poutine. 4. Vegan Poutine For those who would prefer veggies over meat in your poutine, the vegan poutine is a very healthy and tasty combination of guilt-free food good for all persuasions. 5. Tradional You didn't think we wouldn't mention the classic did you. At the end of the day, nothing beats the original combination of fresh fried french fries, fresh cheese curds and gravy to top it off and melt the cheese. By Kevin King
I recently came across someone who ate the rind and that dawned on me do other people do the same thing. I personally think that to enjoy the cheese the rind needs to be cut off, but I have always wondered, is it weird that I think like that ? Let me know in the comments |
